What are Gamepads?

History and basics

Gamepads are hand-held tools used as remote controllers to play video games on gaming consoles, PCs and sometimes, smartphones.

While gamepads’ shapes and functional components vary according to their brand and design era, most contemporary gamepads follow the layout of 4 direction pads(up, down, left, right), an analogue stick and a system-related button (back, share, etc) on the left, four face buttons(usually referred to A, B, X and Y), an analogue stick and another system-related button (start, options, etc - usually used for pausing games or activating menu screen mid-game) on the right, left and right bumpers and triggers on the side of the gamepad facing away from the user and easily reached by the index and middle fingers.
